The endgame is Joseph, not TJ. This shows that none of you have the capacity to understand the noir story and analyze it to see the truth; all of you are just surface-level readers. The moments that you see between Ian and TJ are actually in the past, before Ian moved to Chicago two years later with Toby in chapter 99 to reunite with Joseph, who is studying there. The author ended the story in the past between Ian and TJ just to emphasize TJ becoming the “wet sand.” Ian chose Joseph, which is why he told him that he had to do something Joseph might not understand: he has to face his trauma before he can fully offer himself to Joseph. Wet Sand ended when Ian went to face the trauma attached to TJ, leaving TJ to become the wet sand. This allows for a new beginning where Ian and Joseph can have a future together, completely free from the baggage of their past and trauma but of course we will not see their reunion because it’s a happy ending outside of wet sand. Did you all even realize that Ian was thinking about Joseph when he said “I love you,” to TJ? and that is why TJ never said it back cause he knows it wasn’t meant for him? Ian never wore that ring on his finger because he is only committed to Joseph. If you look at the polaroid of Ian’s birthday that Joseph took on Doyak’s insta, Ian has removed his tattoos and is finally wearing Joseph’s ring on his finger.
