Look, Omegaverse stories are often an excuse to be lazy with characterization and cut corners with story telling. This story does NOT do that.
Is the love interest a right dick? Yes, but the story doesn’t pretend otherwise. It doesn’t pretend that the relationship between the MC and the LI is anything but transactional and extremely imbalanced. The LI knows he’s holding the MC’s finances and loved ones over his head, and making him make impossible choices. And when the LI catches feelings, he actually goes, “oh shit… how do I fix this? CAN I fix this?” and has a real come-to-Jesus moment. The MC and the LI go through the process of earning trust and while there’s omegaverse dynamics in there, they don’t replace the actual character development.
The MC is also not a pushover. He is basically being held hostage but he has his priorities straight (protect little brother, get out of debt) and he has a temper and can fight back. He opts to use the LI because the LI is relatively safer than other options, but the narrative doesn’t frame this as secret love. Rather, it’s clearly shown as desperation and lack of options. When the LI decides he wants more, the MC is rightly skeptical and it’s wonderful ans satisfying to see them navigate the change.
