If you read the novel, it’s explained more clearly. Even though MC never really says it out loud, he’s always regretted his decision to quit swimming. His love life hasn’t been great either—he’s always the one getting left behind, and he tends to blame himself, thinking he can’t hold onto anything long-term, whether it’s swimming (which he truly loved) or his relationships.
Meanwhile, ML is the type to go all in when it comes to relationships and is kind of naive (at least from MC’s perspective), so MC thinks ML deserves someone better. On top of that, the doctor told him that ML being exposed too early to MC’s omega pheromones could have caused an imprinting effect, which just makes him believe these feelings are only temporary.
So yeah, MC basically sees himself as the older one in this relationship and feels responsible for making sure ML doesn’t make a mistake or get hurt—by not getting involved with him in the first place, that’s why.
